Come and enjoy art classes in a variety of subjects in a variety of media. Your downtown art center offers art classes, workshops,  special events, artist studios, birthday parties, gallery and meeting spaces, and more! Weekly classes and workshops are offered in drawing, painting, and ceramics. Each class is unique and small in size. Students focus on growing as individuals with a lot of personal attention from instructors. The projects are fun and creative and will be taught by our accomplished artists and teachers.     

 

Our art classes meet in 8-week sessions as follows:

Kids in the Kitchen

Mondays @ 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.
Ages: 8-14 years old
Instructor: Melissa Dent/ Helen Redding

Tuition: $120 per 8-week session + $20 supply fee

The young chefs in this class will be preparing lite dishes including appetizers/snacks/kid friendly entrees/desserts to enjoy at each class…basic terms on the use of kitchen utensils & safety as well as format of table setting will be covered. A different menu will be prepared for each class…Fun for All!..Bon Appe’tit

KidShop Studio

Mondays @ 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

Tuition: $99 per 8-week session ($90 member) + $15 supply fee

Explore your creativity! Classes offer students the chance to experience a variety of media including sculpture, painting, drawing and more. Students will work on a variety of projects with an emphasis on fun, creativity, and self-expression all while learning valuable artistic techniques. This class is appropriate for all levels from the beginner just looking for fun to the avid artist looking for new ways to experiment and improve their work!

Youth Wheel Throwing

Wednesdays @ 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
Ages: 9-18
 years old
Instructor: Lois Harvey
Tuition: $120 per 8-week session ($100 member) + $15 supply fee

Come have fun with clay! This class is an introduction to the potter's wheel for beginning students. Basic throwing skills will be taught, as well as the technical skills needed to make beautiful creations. Surface treatments will also be explored to finish your artwork with style. This course is limited to seven students per session.

Youth Wheel Throwing

Thursdays @ 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
Ages: 9-18
 years old
Instructor: Madelyn Shelor

Tuition: $120 per 8-week session ($100 member) + $15 supply fee

Hand-Building in Clay for Kids

Tuesdays @ 4 p.m.-5:15 p.m.

​Kids will have a blast expressing themselves artistically through the medium of clay. In this class kids will learn to design and make hand-built pottery and ceramic sculpture using various techniques such as slab construction, coiling, and pinching. Glazing techniques will also be covered in this course. This is a great class for all levels; we start with the basic construction methods and explore the limitless possibilities of the material.

Kids on Canvas: Drawing & Painting

Tuesdays @ 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
Ages: 9-14 years old
Instructor: Cheyenne Smith

Tuition: $99 per 8-week session ($90 member) + $15 supply fee

Students will explore the world of drawing and painting in this class. They will be encouraged to let their own creativity guide them with the paints while learning about the materials and techniques.  For inspiration, we will look at various artists throughout history to understand how they made creative and inventive artwork.  We will draw and paint on a variety of surfaces. For each new technique, students will receive a class demonstration at the beginning of class. 

Homeschool

Homeschool: The Art Experience for Kids

Tuesdays @ 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Ages: 5
-13 years old

Tuition: $99 per 8-week session ($90 member) + $15 supply fee

This class is designed for home-schooled children who want to enrich their educational experience through fun art activities in a well-rounded curriculum. Students will create artwork while learning about media and techniques. The curriculum will include a variety of projects in drawing, painting, and clay.

The projects will be adapted to meet the ability level of the student while challenging the student to seek the potential of their creative ability.

Painting with Watercolors

Session 3: March 6- April 10th

Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Instructor: Rebecca Hibbs

Tuition: $110 per 6-week session ($100 member)

In this class, both beginners and intermediates will learn the ins and outs of watercolor painting. Join Rebecca to delve into the basics of the medium and studies of value, light and color mixing. Small class sizes ensure personalized time with the instructor. 

Adult Drawing

Tuesdays @ 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Ages: 14+
Instructor: Cheyenne Smith
Tuition: $110 per 8-week session ($100 member)

If learning to draw has always been a desire, but a lack of skills or knowledge has been a fear factor, this class is for you. Join Bunyan Morris as he guides the class through the basics of drawing through perception. We will begin with the very basics such as how to perceive what you are drawing, how to use shading to create form and how to draw with more confidence. Supplies needed: Drawing pencils, eraser and a quality sketchbook. 

teens & adults Ceramics

Classes will meet once a week for either 4 or 8 weeks.
Class fee includes:

  • instruction

  • use of equipment

  • 25lbs. of clay for 8-week classes or 12 pounds for 4 week classes

  • studio glazes and firings

Additional clay may be purchased. All clay is $40 for a 25lb. bag. The price of clay includes the cost of firings and studio glazes.

Ceramic Sampler Classes

Tuition: $224 per 8-week session ($205 member) 

​No matter how young or old you can be successful in clay. Employing a variety of hand building and wheel throwing techniques we will have fun making functional and sculptural pieces. We will glaze and fire our work to take home and enjoy. This is a perfect class for all levels!  Pick the day and time that works best for you.  Our instructor will individualize instruction to your needs. Tuition includes 25 lbs. of clay with glazes and firings, as well as practice time during Open Studio hours. Additional clay and tools can be purchased for $40.

Beginning Wheel Throwing

Mondays @ 6:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Ages: 14+

Instructor: John Skelton
Tuition: $224 per 8-week session ($205 member)

Want to focus only on learning how to throw on the wheel?  This class is designed for you! In this eight-week course, you will learn the techniques to throw cups, bowls and small vases on a pottery wheel, apply colorful glazes, and fire your work. All of your work will be functional in the home. 

Specialty Wheel Throwing Classes

Thursdays @ 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Ages: 14+

Instructor: Linda Whitt Smith
Tuition: $112 per 4-week session ($103 member)

These classes are designed for the wheel-throwing student who has some experience. In these 4-week sessions, our instructor, Linda Whitt Smith will focus on furthering your skills in specific areas. Linda will also share her secrets to glazing! 12 pounds of clay included.

Lidded Vessels- August 17, 2023- September 7, 2023

In this mini-session students will focus on learning how to create a variety of lidded forms.  Different styles of lids will be demonstrated as well as how to create an assortment of knobs. Join the fun with Linda!

 

All About Spouts- October 26, 2023- November 16, 2023

This class will be focused on making spouts for different vessels, such as pitchers and teapots.  There are many styles and techniques to master spout-making.  Join Linda to see demonstrations and tips!

 

Making Sets- January 11, 2024- February 1, 2024

If you are wanting to create a set by replicating the same forms accurately this session is for you. Linda will give you tips and tricks on creating the consistent size and shape of your desired forms.

 

Kitchen Needs- April 11, 2024- May 2, 2024

This mini session will help you to create nesting and berry bowls, cream and sugar sets, juicers and more!  Join Linda for demonstrations and tips to create kitchen aides.

Surface Decoration & Creativity

Thursdays @ 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Ages: 16+

Instructor: Crystal Holman
Tuition: $112 per 4-week session ($103 member)

Dates: September 14 - October 5

This four-week class will explore different techniques for embellishing your ceramics. The ceramic form gives the artist an opportunity to express their creativity and make their ceramics unique. During this class, participants will create beautiful projects through carving, sgraffito, majolica, and underglaze techniques. The projects will involve working with clay at various stages, and the participants will be encouraged to apply the techniques to their unique forms. Participants will create their forms through wheel-thrown and slab-built projects. The class is open to all who want to learn, and it will be a time of fun and learning. Projects will be glazed when they are finished, and the participant can pick up their pieces when they are ready. So, come and take your ceramics to a new level of fun and creativity!
