About the Show
Exhibition Statement:
“Homebody” is a curation of work in response to Larissa Miller's reflection of Andrew Wyeth's Christina's World (1948). The painting depicts a woman sitting within an open field, looking at a house out in the distance. Wyeth was inspired to create the painting after watching Anna Christina Olson, a woman with an undiagnosed muscular disorder, crawl in the field surrounding her home from the window of the house that is also depicted in the painting.
"I was drawn to Christina's World by the sense of emotional distance it creates between the subject and her surroundings. This perceptual way of creating an environment, whether representing the attempt to reach a destination or the act of leaving it, made me reflect on today's climate in the United States and how abstract it feels to call this place home as a Black woman when it continuously proves how little it finds a home in me.
Historically, we exist in this space within our surroundings and environments, yet it has never felt safe for me to feel rooted in one particular place. To "claim" a home feels misplaced, and I have always felt this sense of needing to "move." It has been a struggle to identify and define what home means to me, and how in America it feels that Black women cannot trust place as our central defining factor for "home." Home is fragile and can be taken away; home feels like it cannot truly be ours. Home doesn't historically or ancestrally mean home in this place where we exist. "

Artist Statement:
I am an artist and designer who explores the rich intersections of Black identity, womanhood and lived experience through the magical lenses of myth, nature, and spirituality. What started as my quest for creative freedom has blossomed into something bigger – creating spaces where others can find pieces of their own story in my art.
My work emerges from life's in-between spaces, where I've grown the most and deepened my connection to self and nature. In this space between knowing and mystery, I find myself diving deep into the unknown, transforming those hidden inner thoughts into visual stories that speak to our shared human experience. Through expressive body gestures and carefully chosen materials, I give shape to those hard-to-capture feelings like vulnerability and strength.
