Book, Lyrics, and Music by Tom Stolz

With a vocal range from contralto to soprano, Mahalia Jackson was truly one of the world’s greatest singers of gospel music.  Mahalia is a joyous celebration of the life and music of this remarkable icon.  She was  a humble, deeply religious woman whose expressive, full-throated voice carried her from a three room shanty in New Orleans to appearances before presidents and royalty. The show features Mildred Falls, her longtime accompanist, and Thomas Dorsey, the “father” of gospel music among other historical characters. The joy and inspiration of her heartfelt songs provide a counterpoint to the urgent message delivered by her friend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Standing at his side, Mahalia Jackson became the musical voice of the civil rights movement. Directed by Mical Whitaker.
