Private Lessons

The Averitt Center for the Arts offers private lessons in visual arts, piano, and voice. Times of classes are arranged at the convenience of student and instructor. All payments are made directly to the instructor. All private study instructors are willing to teach children and adults from beginners to advanced.

Voice Lessons with Sarah Hancock

Statesboro Youth Chorale director Sarah Hancock teaches healthy, age appropriate voice techniques through folk, classical and Broadway repertoire. Sarah has trained many children, youth, teens, and adults in all genres of music. Mrs. Hancock is currently on staff in the Georgia Southern music department.

Piano Lessons with Wemberly Ponder

Pianist/Composer Wemberly Ponder is a previous winner of a prestigious scholarship from the Mozart Society of Atlanta and studied at the Mozarteum Institute in Salzburg, Austria. He has had an extensive accompanist and composing career. He currently accompanies Georgia Southern students, private voice students and several area church choirs.

Violin Lessons with Abby Thompson

Violin instructor Abby Thompson is offering lessons for both the beginner and intermediate learner. Mrs. Thompson has extensive experience in violin and piano pedagogy and performance, including several years using the Suzuki Method for Violin.

Music Studio with Dr. Northrip

Master teacher and former university professor Dr. Don W. Northrip is now accepting new students for private lessons in piano, voice, composition and conducting. All ages and levels of experience are welcome to study.

Local art educator Vanessa North has her own art studio at the arts center where she meets with students to teach all facets of the visual arts.

Retired art teacher Lawrence “Larry” Smith continues assisting others with drawing lessons and more through private study at the Arts Center.

Private Ballet Lessons with Jurijs Safonovs, Emily Winn or Mathyn Miller

Private lessons are available for students of any age and level. These lessons are designed to focus in specific aspects of their technique. Available by appointment only.

All instructors are fully qualified to teach in their area of expertise. When necessary, assistants are hired to keep adult – child ratios at optimal levels. All Averitt Center employees undergo a criminal background check. The Averitt Center for the Arts takes a strong stand against child endangerment. Parents of young children are welcome to observe from outside the classroom if they desire.
